New San Agustin Cathedral Nears Completion in Tucson

Bishop chair moves to visible platform at San Agustin church

The interior of New San Agustin will host Masses with priests presiding from the bishop's chair, now on a central platform. The historic high-back chair moved from the old cathedral will return from All Saints, replacing the south sanctuary seat. Bishop Green praises papal simplification of bishop ceremonies. The last pontifical Mass in San Agustin was Christmas Eve 1966 before the 1967 rebuild. Archbishop Salpointe's burial moved to Holy Hope Cemetery on Nov. 29, 1966.
