Natural Arch Found Deep in Grand Canyon
A U S geological survey team, led by geologist Phillip Johnson and engineer R B Sanderson, discovered a large natural arch in Fern Glen Canyon seven to eight miles below Havasu Canyon. The red limestone bridge rises 800 to 1000 feet above the Colorado riverbed, spanning a gorge about a half mile from the river and hidden by boulders. The find occurred during a river trip from Lee's Ferry toward Lake Mead. The Arch may be related to questions about decreasing river water levels amid their search for clues to disappearances of water from the river.
