Embargo on Soybean Exports by Nixon Admin

The Nixon administration ordered an immediate embargo on exports of high protein soybeans and other oilseed products to curb rising livestock feed costs. Agriculture Secretary Butz called it drastic, with an estimated 30 million bushels saved, while Dent said the embargo lasts until next fall's harvest. Japanese anger followed the move as imports fill most of their four million metric tons yearly soybean needs.

Tentative pact boosts wages of Teamsters

The Teamsters Union and the trucking industry reached a 33 month tentative contract for about 400 000 drivers nationwide, delivering a total wage rise of 95 cents per hour over the period. Current average pay is 6.16 dollars per hour with 35 cents starting July 1 and 30 cents annually thereafter, plus cost of living raises up to 11 cents per hour, plus improved vacations holidays and health and welfare benefits. The agreement exceeds the government flexible standard but is not expected to be challenged by the Cost of Living Council and aligns with recent industry settlements.

Ex POW Kavanaugh dies amid aiding enemy charges

Ex Marine Sgt Abel Larry Kavanaugh, 24, returned from five years in North Vietnamese prison camp and faced charges of aiding the enemy. Found with a bullet to the left temple in his inlaws home, a .25 pistol underneath. Wife Sandra and father-in-law Steven Garbo present. No suicide note found. His death echoes similarly of Air Force Capt Edward Bruno who died a month earlier. Kavanaugh had contested the charges saying he did nothing. Investigators note despondency in recent days. He had been declared in good health earlier the day of his death.
