Arizona welcomes new residents as population soars from 600000 in 1946 to over a million. About one in four newcomers enters the labor market with manufacturing retail trade and government jobs absorbing most new workers.
A four-state storm outbreak killed at least four people and injured nearly 100 as tornadoes and severe thunderstorms struck Nebraskas Hilldredge addition near Scottsbluff and Texas New Mexico and Wyoming. In Carlsbad New Mexico the storm caused 500000 dollars in damage while a farm mother and two children near Wheatland Wyoming were injured. Authorities in Scottsbluff battled floods from the Platte River while Amarillo suffered widespread outages and flooding. A tractor operator Kenneth Guier Sr. died in Panhandle Texas from a lightning strike and Mrs. Henry Julian was killed in Canadian Texas as more storms were reported. Texas Oklahoma and surrounding areas faced continued alerts.
The Tucson Mercury reached 101 yesterday for the third straight day and stayed hotter than Phoenix and Yuma. Forecasts expect similar warmth with windy periods and statewide highs ranging from the mid 80s to the low 100s across cities including Gila Bend and Winslow.

Hautem, 44, is accused of his wife’s murder between 7 p m December 18 and 7 a m December 19, with three defense attorneys present.
County Atty Raul H Castro and chief deputy H Earl Rogge questioned panelists as three prospective jurors were excused for opinions and three for personal reasons. Hautem was arrested March 16 after his wife's battered body was found south of Tucson. He has refused to discuss the case.
A search plane sighted a one man life raft about 123 miles south of Tokyo where a Marine flier missing three nights earlier sent radio signals. An SA16 Albatross and Air Force planes shadowed the area while flares and search ships combed foggy waters for the missing man, unclear if both crewmen were aboard.
Washington government drops 24 year bid to try Owen Lattimore on perjury charges. Attorney general Brownell cited prior court dismissals and impossibility of pursuing five remaining counts. Lattimore, Johns Hopkins lecturer on Far Eastern affairs, faced accusation of denying Communist ties.
Both chambers approved a two year extension for the doctors draft while keeping the four year regular draft. The House passed 388 5 after rejecting a back and forth to reconfer with the Senate and the Senate approved by voice vote with no debate. Conferees accepted the medical section.

In Saigon Indochina terrorists believed to be Communists lobbed a hand grenade at the U S information office. One Frenchman was injured as assailants scattered anti American leaflets nearby. Initial reports said no Americans were hurt.
