Bulgaria Rebuffs Greek Talks on Restoring Ties
Washington June 28 The Bulgarian government accused Greece of rejecting a renewed negotiation over reopening diplomatic relations severed since 1941. Bulgarian Minister to the U N Nissim Mevorah notified the UN that talks collapsed after a June 16 meeting when Greece refused to discuss frontier security and other fundamental issues. He said the Greek envoy favored limiting talks to restoring relations. The Bulgarian letter sparked no surprise in the State Department, seen as propaganda, while Athens prepared its reply. The Bulgarian minister criticized American understanding of Bulgaria and blamed U S press coverage for portraying Bulgaria negatively.
