Gasoline prices roll back nationwide after IRS probes
More than 1100 service stations cut prices following Internal Revenue Service checks on fuel price compliance with the freeze. IRS and Cost of Living Council investigations found 741 independent and 363 company owned stations charged above the freeze, averaging 2 cents per gallon. The largest overcharge detected was 0.5 cents per gallon across 500,000 gallons, requiring a $2,500 refund.
