Pope Paul VI announced sweeping reforms to bishop regalia and liturgy. Thrones and canopies are simplified to a chair, vestments are trimmed, and helpers in mass are reduced. Decrees dated June 21 set Sept. 8 as the effective date, restricting who may wear episcopal garments and how services are conducted.

Bishop Green Welcomes Pope Restricting Bishops Pomp

Bishop Francis J. Green of Tucson praises the Pope’s limits on episcopal pomp and expects most American bishops to welcome the changes. He notes no Solemn Pontifical High Mass at Easter or Christmas and says concelebration with parish priests continues. He adds San Agustin Cathedral work needs few changes and the old throne will stay with only the canopy removed.

Thoresens Win Delay In Gun Trial

The postponed trial of millionaire gun collector William E. Thoresen Jr. and his wife Louise was deferred indefinitely by order of Justice William O. Douglas. The hearing will assess the validity of Thoresen's 1959 Maine burglary conviction, with no further action until at least October when the Supreme Court reconvenes. The case began in 1967 after raids across the Bay Area seized 70 tons of arms and ammunition claimed by the couple.
