The Tucson area saw daylong showers on San Juan’s Day, with storms, lightning, and flash floods across the region. Rain totals reached about 1.27 inches as residents recalled the long folk tradition of cleansing sins in rivers and canals.
A San Juan Day tale recalls Saint John the Baptist's rain rite begun in 16th century Michoacan. Spanish missionary prayer supposedly brought rain to drought-stricken Tarascan lands, then spread to Old Tucson with horse racing, picnics, Elysian Grove dancing, and the juego del gallo roosters.

Klinder Bert Hill and Kenneth Boyer of Phoenix. Hill served 12 years, others about four. Duncan plans replacements but will not name them now.
Congress approves a 7 percent pay raise for more than one million government workers. The compromise bill, costing about 328 million dollars annually, awaits President Eisenhower's signature after his New England tour. Efffective retroactively from March 1.
Bevan elected to the Labour shadow cabinet rejoining the group 14 months after quitting over Clement Attlee's foreign policy. He and Harold Wilson head the left wing bloc with seven Bevan supporters also elected in a vote shaping future government strategy.

President Juan D. Peron released scores of political prisoners to restore normalcy in Argentina. Radical party and Democrats announced releases of provincial detainees and leaders, while 16 cabinet ministers and others resigned to permit reorganization. Peron pledged to reveal facts of the Navy led revolt and discussed a forthcoming modified government structure.
Three British Royal Air Force officers piloted a twin engine jet bomber from Bardufoss Norway to Ladd Air Force Base Alaska. They completed a 3200 mile crossing in six hours and 23 minutes at an average of 500 miles per hour. The flight began 9:04 p m Norway time and ended 4:27 p m Alaska time marking the first pole to pole jet crossing in a jet bomber.
The Tucson readers theater at Liberal Arts auditorium hosts a free staging of The Glass Menagerie tonight at 8. Public welcome with no charge. Other events include baseball at Hi Corbett Field and a Gigi screening at Corral Theater. Tomorrow features a Carnegie Library bookmobile stop and a Tucson Bridge Club event at 7:45.
