Pentagon halts tritonal bomb shipments after two explosions
The Pentagon suspended shipment of 250 and 500 pound tritonal bombs for at least a week after safety concerns and unsatisfactory reports raised by Deputy Assistant Defense Secretary Paul Riley. The bombs, loaded at Concord Naval Weapons Station and bound for Southeast Asia, were linked to April and May blasts in Roseville and Benson. Navy experts suggested heat caused the blasts and urged better packaging and car blocking to prevent reoccurrence.
