A high-speed head-on crash on the Nogales highway killed Samuel J. Lightfoot, 43, of 4650 E Cooper St, in front of the Half Way Station. Three others in the second car were critically injured. one escaped with minor injuries.
Four Tijuana residents including an elderly couple and their niece and nephew were seriously injured in a two car collision on a highway near the Mexican border. Louis Romero 62 and his wife were given last rites in County Hospital. Beatrice Sigala 14 is in critical condition with a brain concussion and facial lacerations. Gilbert Sigala 16 and his brother 13 were treated for injuries. The driver of the opposite vehicle, Lightfoot, was also injured. sheriff's deputies responded to a second crash involving Raymond and James Stoughton in San Diego visitors.
President Eisenhower signed a new tariff cutting power into law, extending the reciprocal trade agreements act to three years and allowing up to five percent tariff reductions annually in exchange for concessions. Democratic leaders attended the White House signing, marking the first new import-duty reduction authority since 1945.
Tucson marked the longest day with heat as the temperature reached 107 in the afternoon and near record territory. Gila Bend hit 111, while Phoenix 106 and Yuma 108 underscored statewide extremes in a hot summer day.

The measure funds bomber production with $355 million more than the House allowance, marking Eisenhower’s first reversal in a major military recommendation.
Lt. Col. Joseph F. Reilly announces awards totaling 1 757 000 to industry and the University of Arizona for the Army Electronic Proving Ground at Fort Huachuca. Major contracts include Melpar Inc 990 000 RSA 479 000 Armour Research 175 000 Hycon 50 000 Kay Lab 48 000 and UA 15 000 for circuit study.

In Moscow crowds of about 100000 heard Indian Prime Minister Nehru predict Red China will join the United Nations. Soviet Premier Bulganin announced Russia will attend the Geneva Big Four talks to ease tension and urged broader participation in efforts toward peace.
Nehru announced in Moscow that Soviet Premier Nikolai Bulganin is invited to India and has accepted. No date was set though, with winter travel typical for foreigners. the trip would likely not occur this summer. Nehru spoke after a Kremlin meeting and then addressed a Dynamo Stadium rally before 100,000 Soviet citizens.
