Shiffler Sees Prisoners Returning Home Soon
Washington June 20 UPI Rep Andrew C Shiffler of West Virginia on a foreign affairs subcommittee forecast the return within a few months of all American civilians and wounded or ill prisoners of war from Japan. The panel assessed 19 919 POWs and 5 593 civilians held by Japan and noted some service members were free in Japanese areas. Schiffler tied his optimism to two repatriation proposals: flyouts from Japan or return by boat via Soviet waters. State Department aides, though less hopeful, are pursuing exchanges.
