Adventure in Shark Harpooning and Arctic Exploration

Gavin Maxwell recounts turning a Shetland island venture into profitable shark hunting with a self made harpoon. The basking shark’s size and liver value frame the tale, including hand processing and a 1948 business closure. The book blends adventure with science and ends noting the author’s vivid, sometimes graphic, narrative. The Arctic Tern chronicle follows the Helmericks as dedicated Alaskans who trek by plane and canoe, build a home, and celebrate wilderness and nature despite isolation. Their breathless prose and nonstop enthusiasm mark the work, as the couple anticipates future tales of nomadic life and family.
