Mesa city council considered a proposed 2,700,000 budget for the coming fiscal year. The new spending plan beginning July 1 totals 375,136 more than the 1956-57 budget and includes pay boosts for most city employees.
The body of a Phoenix boy, age and specifics uncertain, was recovered by Maricopa County deputies after a rubber raft overturned in Verde River near Beeline Highway. Sheriff’s Sgt. Paul Mullinix identified the deceased as Joe Abel Talbo. the other three boys were rescued.
Deputies misidentified the Freelin Huff ranch foreman on Saturday morning as John Angulo. The man who reported seeing Paul Richard Whalen stuff the Huff bodies in a car trunk is actually John Costas, while John Angulo leads Cortaro Cotton and Cattle Co as cattle manager.
The father of Paul Richard Whalen is said to be in very poor condition after Whalen, 29, killed Freelin Huff and his wife Louise Huff near Marana. Whalen claimed a divine mission and confessed after roadblocks and a manhunt. The Huffs were found beneath a bridge, and Whalen’s car and weapons were recovered as he faced arraignment in Tucson.
