Displaced Persons Bill Becomes Law and Reforms

Signed in Washington, the new act extends the displaced persons program for one year, raising eligible admissions to 341,000. It adds 5,000 war orphans, 54,744 people of German ancestry, and up to 15,000 pre-April 1949 refugees, while removing farming and Baltic state quotas and updating entry dates. The measure reduces discrimination concerns from 1948 and aligns with IRO allocations and other postwar resettlement efforts.
