Senate Panel Pushes Tax Cuts on Local Phone and Travel
The Senate Finance Committee voted to repeal local telephone service telegraph and travel taxes, cutting federal revenue by 752 million annually. The move was attached to a bill extending 4 billion dollars in taxes and boosting the debt limit. Chairman Byrd opposed the repeals saying they threaten the budget surplus. Byrd disputed Eisenhower's surplus estimate of 4.2 billion. Conference talks with the House likely mirror last year’s delay to July 1, 1960.
