Workers may collect idle pay for refusing non-union jobs

Phoenix Attorney General Morrison ruled a union worker who declines a non-union job may be eligible for unemployment compensation. The Globe hearing followed protests by contractor Herman McKusick challenging benefits to Ellis Fisher, amid right to work questions. The case was briefed as Morrison demanded more time to issue an opinion.

Sign Ordered Removed Over County Sky Sign Violation

A $5,000 Firestone Co. sign atop Wilmot Plaza was ordered removed by the District 1 County Board of Adjustment for violating a county ordinance against sky signs in a light business area. It was erected without a permit at 6303 E Broadway. The board also granted 10 minor variance requests including Chesin Construction Co. to build homes on Avenida Sirio and Calle Canis with 90-foot side yards, against a 10-foot rule. A federal state law citation noted that a union worker’s rejection of non union work does not constitute refusing suitable work.

City Manager invites critique of 41.6 million Tucson plan

Tucson City Manager Porter Homer urged public review of a long-range 41.6 million capital improvements program ahead of any bond election. Speaking to the Tucson Young Republicans, he endorsed scrutiny, suggested breaking bonds into separate issues, and explained why traffic overpasses on South Park Avenue were not included. He noted council and citizen approval were still pending.
