Niemann Steps Into Mayor Vacancy After Houston's Death

J. O. Niemann, serving his ninth term on the city council, becomes acting mayor following the sudden death of Mayor E. T. Houston. The charter allows the council to fill the vacancy within 30 days, choosing from among voters or council members. Niemann, 60, born in Pittsburgh in 1889, has lived in Tucson since 1915 and works at 517 E Ninth St with one son in San Jose.

Tucson Leader E T Houston Dies on Phoenix Visit

Mayor E T Houston collapsed from a heart attack in Phoenix and died last night. His body arrived in Tucson where he will lie in state at Reilly's chapel and at the Masonic temple. Survived by wife Ethel and two daughters, he had served as Tucson mayor since 1947 and was noted for vigorous progress.

Ten floor building planned at N Stone Avenue

Bernard Roth, local realtor, announced a ten story building at 146-48 N Stone Ave replacing the planned seven stories. A New York syndicate via Atty Moses Mager backs the project with Green and Joesler as architects. Construction to start in October, finish in five to six months with an arcade and two sided stores along a central corridor. Parking will be at the rear.

Betts Convicted Of Perjury By Phoenix Jury

John H. Betts a 70 year old former president of Southwestern Mines Inc of Cochise county was convicted of perjury by a Maricopa county superior court jury. The jury found he falsified an annual report to the Arizona corporation commission in May 1948. Sentence set for 9 30 am June 26 Betts remains free on a $5000 cash bond.

Light Army Tank Cited For Siren Use In Phoenix

Richard C. Osmundson a Phoenix lieutenant in the first armored cavalry reserve was cited for unauthorized use of a siren while driving an M-24 20 ton light army tank through Phoenix He said he used the siren to warn other vehicles to avoid collisions A policeman noted sirens are restricted to emergency vehicles and Osmundson must answer a June 20 court date.

Larger Social Security Urged

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Walter F. George urged expansion of the social security program to cover about 45,000,000 people, nearly doubling benefits, with a plan to raise monthly checks and freeze payroll taxes until 1956 before gradual increases. The measure aims to reduce reliance on public doles and extend coverage to self employed workers, farm workers, domestic workers, and other groups. The bill mirrors a House-passed measure from the prior year and seeks action by next Monday.
