Pfc. Fred P. Romero of Los Angeles survived 14 hours in a Japanese bivouac after an ambush on a central Philippines island. He lay motionless beneath a grenade and rifle, watched enemies pass, then escaped at night through river routes to rejoin his lines. Other soldiers in Mindanao, including Jerry Neary and Staff Sgt. John Carrier, faced danger from bandoliers, fire, and a bees nest amid jungle fighting.
