The Lower Colorado River squatters reach a settlement with the Interior Department led by Stewart Udall. Farmers gain permits with five-year renewals, extended notice, and no land sale. Nonfarming squatters may be helped by a new advisory council and a future land-use program.
The Arrows to Atoms mule mail train supposedly heading east was routed to Los Angeles by mule power. Driver Tom Lawson resisted at first but agreed to ride to Tucson on a flatbed, then continued by mule to complete the delivery of cadets bought by philatelists. Lawson heads toward Phoenix to finish the trip to Los Angeles, per Herman Berlowe.
