Census Count for Tucson Falls Short of Hopes

The 1950 census puts Tucson at 44 395, up 20.6 percent since 1940 but below expectations for a metropolitan addition. Phoenix and several Salt River Valley cities show larger gains, with Pima County expected to exceed 100 000 while Tucson remains subdued.

Three On Trial For Liquor Sale Without License

Barracks Fire at Davis-Monthan AFB

A fire at Davis Monthan air force base damaged the 838th aviation engineers barracks used for sleeping quarters. Reported early the blaze left two firefighters overcome by smoke but revived. The building valued at 15000 dollars with no occupants at the time. crews continued work on the ruins.

Tucson to Build $2 Million Power Substation

The U S Bureau of Reclamation announced bids for a new $2,000,000 power substation near the Mew Tucson Gas Electric Power Co plant on DeMoss Petrie Road. Construction to start within 60 to 90 days with completion in 360 days, two contract parts for steel towers and electrical work. Project to supply Tucson and much of southern Arizona. Power line to Cochise already under construction. R B Stowall of Dallas is associated with the line.

Officials blame battles with tearing out 62 privet hedge plants set out six weeks ago. Knowland Demands Forrestal Diary Subpoena

Senator Knowland urged Senate investigators to subpoena the diary of the late Defense Secretary James Forrestal in the Amerasia espionage case. He argued Forrestal might have delayed arrests over Soviet espionage concerns, noting the diary is in White House custody. A United States B 29 bomber crashed into the North Sea during gunnery practice off the Norfolk coast after bullets from its own guns set its right outboard engine ablaze. Eleven crew members abandoned the burning craft. four rescued, three dead, four missing. The air force noted no safety devices prevented the accidental fire and that precautions were taken.
