Unions Reject Kennecott Copper Contract Offer

A joint union bargaining committee rejected Kennecott Copper Corp. proposal to replace the expiring June 30 contract for about 9,500 workers in Utah Nevada Arizona and New Mexico. The unions called the offer far short of meeting workers needs and will vote June 20 on strike authorization as talks continue. The committee plans further discussions with Kennecott on June 19.

Senate backs tighter redistricting standard

Palm Shadows Flats Sold to California Investors

The Palm Shadows Apartments at 1815 EK Speedway Blvd Tucson were sold to Schonker Management Co of San Francisco for 1.3 million. Sellers were Mrs. Virginia Kelly Turpen and Andrew and William Kelly. Seabreeze Construction Co built the 152-unit complex on land leased from the Kellys. The sale includes the land and the ongoing lease, with the complex serving University of Arizona faculty and students.

Uniform Water Rate Proposals Heard by ACC

The Arizona Corporation Commission heard proposals for uniform water rates affecting Metropolitan Water Co. users. Staff suggested a base rate of 4.02 dollars plus 0.39 per thousand gallons, while Metropolitan urged 5.40 dollars for the first 3,000 gallons and 0.40 per thousand thereafter. Ten areas pay 15 different rates, from 5 dollars for 5,000 gallons in Cresta Loma to 26 dollars for 20,000 gallons in Tangerine Acres. Casa Adobes and Sahuaro Water Cos. were not included in the data as they had just been purchased.

Ford Unveils Electric Comuta Car in England

Ford Motor Co. introduced its electric Comuta commuter car at the Dunton research center in England. The compact, gearless vehicle seats two adults and two children or groceries, has about a 40 mile range at 25 mph with lead-zinc batteries, and may scale to higher speeds with newer batteries.

Nebraska girl wins National Spelling Bee

Jennifer Reinke, 14, an eighth grader from Deshler Nebraska, won the 40th National Spelling Bee. She earned $1000 and prizes to New York Expo 67 in Montreal after correctly spelling Chihuahua and milline. Anne Clark of Huntington West Virginia missed milline, leading to the final round start in the 20th round.
