Tucson Titan sites spark McDonald led clash over downwind plan

University of Arizona physicist Dr James McDonald and the CARTT group press for missiles to be placed downwind of Tucson to limit fallout risk while the Air Force argues for proximity to Davis Monthan AFB and major roads. The dispute centers on wind direction, fallout safety, and economic factors in choosing Titan locations around the city.

AF Confirms Titan Silo Site Criteria City Water Depth

Col William C Bacon, Davis Monthan commander, states land must be dry to 150 feet or more to avoid silo wall collapse after firing. He notes no sites east of the city due to water, saying the San Pedro area has plenty of it.

Titan Base Locations Upset Nuclear Fallout Warning

McDonald disclosed eighteen Titan sites instead of six clusters, warning that a nuclear incident would cause lethal fallout in Tucson on most days. He argued the sites block evacuation routes, require underground shelter for 4 to 6 months, and would triple megatonnage exposure compared to prior plans.

Underground silo complex linked by tubes considered

The passage describes a fully underground complex with work storage and control rooms. Some sites elsewhere use subterranean tubes connecting silos, but the Air Force gave no plan for such linkage here and the six mile spacing between tubes makes it doubtful.
