Origin Studied In Hotel Fire
Chicago fire attorney Henry Eckhardt said the La Salle hotel fire likely started atop an elevator from a signaling cable spark. He cited a witness claiming the loop hotel had about 12 fires in the past year with only four calls to the fire department. Fred Wolf said hotel policy favored fighting blazes without the fire department to prevent guest panic. Eckhardt spoke after his inquiry and is to appear at the coroner's inquest.
