Ocean dumpsite tests reveal cesium and plutonium in ocean sediments
Washington reports that an Alvin dive found cesium 137 near drums 120 miles east of Ocean City Maryland and plutonium 239 240 at a site 40 miles from San Francisco. The finds come from the first test of about 62,000 steel drums dumped 1946 to 1970, raising concerns about past dumping practices.

Atlantic Ocean waste dump plan under EU supervision
Under the European Nuclear Energy Agency, 7300 tons of low level radioactive waste will be dumped in the Atlantic Ocean during June and July. About 1100 tons originate from Britain and the waste will be solidified in concrete or bitumen and placed in steel drums for sinking within a 35 mile radius dumping site about 600 nautical miles southwest of Britain. The site lies about three miles deep and the operation draws growing controversy as nuclear disposal expands.
