Tucson Goes After Sweep Tonight Moraga Hurls Pokes To 12 Inning Win

The Tucson Cowboys pursue a series sweep over the Mexicali Eagles at Hi Corbett field after a 6 4 12 inning win. Maddie Moraga struck out 10 in 9 1 3 innings and Eddie Aros sparked the late rally with a sixth inning homer. Moraga earned the win as Tucson built a 3 0 lead only to see Mexicali tie before Moraga and Arizona’s Ed Cassanega sealed the victory in the 12th.

Tucson edged Mexicali 5 to 4 in 12 innings as Bisbee-Douglas beat Cananea 10 to 7 and Yuma defeated Nogales 12 to 4 with Goose Golf hitting two homers. Gene Starr powered Phoenix with a homer, a double and three singles driving in eight. Cananea and Bisbee-Douglas both led late actions as late heroics framed the night’s scores.

City wide softball program for girls announced

City and county recreation departments join with the YWCA to sponsor a city wide softball program for girls. An organization meeting will be held Tuesday for youths and adults interested in playing or coaching. South Broadway area meets at Wakefield Junior High at 3 pm Tuesday, north Broadway group at Del Anza Park. If successful, the program may expand to other sports later in the year.

Trabert Wins French Net Title in Paris Finale

Tony Trabert of Cincinnati defeated Sven Davidson of Sweden in Paris to claim the French tennis championship title for the second time, 2-6 6-1 6-4 6-2. Angela Mortimer of Great Britain won the women's crown by defeating Dorothy Head Knode of Alameda and New York, 2-6 7-5 10-8, becoming the first Englishwoman in 21 years to win the title. Vukovich Funeral Held in Fresno for Racer Billy Vukovich

Funeral services were held today for Billy Vukovich 36 a Fresno native and two time Indianapolis winner who died at the speedway while attempting a third straight victory. The Rev Carl P Maier officiated at Free Evangelical Lutheran Church and burial followed Belmont Memorial Park. The city hall flag was at half mast as the community mourned this racing figure. The Junior Chamber of Commerce announced plans for a memorial honoring his feats after his return from Indianapolis last year.
