Improper Vote Seeking Hearing Set in Tucson Case

Joseph B. Gonforone, charged yesterday with improper electioneering in the May 2 special congressional race, must appear in Justice Court at 10 a.m. next Thursday. Charges were filed by the county attorney from a complaint by Glen W. Vance, a Republican challenger in Precinct 36. The case cites passing out Morris K. Udall campaign cards at the polls as a misdemeanor under election laws. The complaint was by Ashby Lohse for the Pima County Republican Central Committee. Lohse says the party seeks legal election practices, not the outcome. Democratic chairman David S. Wine notes that election violations often follow elections but Democrats have not filed actions against Republicans.
