Explorer's Condition Is Critical After Deep Utah Cave Rescue
University of California graduate student James Dowling, 24, rescued Monday night from North America’s deepest cave in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, remained critical. He spent 86 hours in freezing darkness after his safety rope jammed during the ascent with companions John Wood, 23, and Paul Gerhard, 22, of Bradensburg, Ind. A three hour extraction followed 20 hours of climbing.
