Berlin's 16 000 striking railway workers rejected a Communist call to return to work and held firm for full pay. Union leaders met East Berlin Mayor Ernst Reuter to discuss freight trains from western Germany as the Communist and independent unions spar over wage terms and maintenance of the strike.
The Tucson City Council unanimously recommended decontrol saying there is no longer a need for rent controls in the area. The action, to be sent to Gov. Garvey, relies on the wartime housing rules and applies to the city and perhaps the wider area. Local landlords supported decontrol while labor groups urged retention.
A government prosecutor told the jury in the Alger Hiss perjury trial that Hiss and Whittaker Chambers plotted in 1937 to extract secret State Department documents for delivery to a Russian agent. Barbara Willis 13 of Tucson died Wednesday at home after a long battle with acute lymphatic leukemia. Born March 11 1936 she faced illness since last September and hoped to return to Mansfeld Junior High next fall. She gained nationwide attention for craving watermelons as Tucsonans donated fruit and support. She is survived by her mother six brothers and seven sisters. Rostary and high mass services planned at Rully's chapel and St Ambrose church with burial in Holy Hope.
A forest blaze in the Rattlesnake and Pine canyon sectors of the Chiricahua mountains was under control by Wednesday while crews mop up. Food and supplies were flown to 170 men from Rodeo New Mexico on Monday and Tuesday. The fire began last Friday and officials had no acreage estimate yet.

Prague June 1 Communist leader Gerhart Eisler threatened to sue the United States for damages to cover the $23,000 bail forfeited when he fled the United States to escape possible prison time. In the Hotel Ambassador he mocked Attorney General Tom Clark and J. Edgar Hoover, said his flight was timed for strategic reasons, and claimed he may sue London lawyers for the loss. He left England abruptly to avoid Clark’s efforts to extradite him.
