Negro Political Unit Organized in Tucson Arizona

The Tucson unit of the Negro Political Association of Arizona was formed Saturday with about 50 attendees at Prince Hall Masonic Lodge. Ruben Salter named temporary chairman and elections for permanent officers are set for Aug. 21. The group aims to register voters, back qualified Black candidates, and push affirmative integration in education housing and employment while seeking a fair standard of living.

Six utilities join Four Corners expansion plan

Six utility firms including Tucson Gas and Electric Co will participate in a 150 million expansion to add 720000 kilowatts of capacity at the Four Corners Power Plant near Four Corners New Mexico. Southern California Edison will own 48 percent with other shares allocated to Arizona Public Service Salt River Project Public Services Company of New Mexico and El Paso Electric. Construction and operation costs will be shared proportionally. The first 750000 kilowatt coal unit starts October 1969 with the second slated for the next year.

ACLU Attack on Cochise JC Denied by College Leader

Dr George Spikes a state Board of Directors member rejected ACLU charges of infringements on academic freedom at Cochise Junior College. He called the union report insubordination and said he will support the college governing council against outside pressure citing library book removals art exhibit censorship and student paper adviser pressures as alleged incidents.

Bridge Game Winners at Student Union and JCC Schedule

Winners from the Friday night duplicate bridge at the student Union include North-South pairing Mrs Arnold Swancara with Mrs Tome Herper in first place, and East-West winners Jack Stark with Ed Blackmore. Upcoming schedule lists master point games at the Jewish Community Center and Student Union this week with specific times.

Group To Aid Boys Club Auction In Tucson

The Exchange Club of Tucson will sponsor a September auction to raise money for equipment for the Boys Club of Tucson at 1411 N El Rio Drive. Hugh B Copenhaver asked for donations of clothing furniture and appliances. The club approved by the Tucson Fund Raising Review Board.

House collapses in Bombay rains kills six

A five story building collapsed during a torrential rainstorm in Bombay. Six people died including two children and several others were injured. Rescue crews searched the wreckage amid continuing rainfall.
