The Pan American four engine Stratocruiser Flying Cloud with 54 aboard developed engine trouble and returned to Idlewild after a Bermuda flight. This marked the third such incident in four days.
The Senate Appropriations Committee approved a $3.778 billion second year European recovery program, 10 percent below Truman’s request, with $900 million for occupied areas in Germany Austria Japan and Ryukyu. Taft announced he would vote against the North Atlantic treaty, saying it risks war and imposes a 20 year obligation.
In Los Angeles on July 1, hospital physicians said 19 year old Alwyn Sonny Ivers was in very good condition after jaw reconstruction surgery. Ivers was wounded in the jaw and neck while protecting his 16 year old bride Betty Bowen from attack by gunman William Brock who was killed in the struggle. The couple were married in a hospital ceremony on July 3.
The Tucson Chamber of Commerce board authorizes a 10 year lease of the city owned fairgrounds racing plant to Arizona Racing Inc. The arrangement, pending Arizona racing commission permit, puts Jack Dempsey in charge of races at the South Sixth avenue oval with a one percent share of parimutuel grosses to the chamber.
The government cut its July wheat crop forecast to 1.189 billion bushels a drop of about 148 million from June. It also projected a near record 1950 corn crop, and noted ample bread grain to cover domestic and export needs despite the decline. The report hints at possible return to prewar production controls.
Phoenix July 11 Governor Dan E Garvey expressed deep regret at the death of Texas Governor Beauford Jester He recalled meeting Jester at a governors conference in Colorado Springs and called him a man liked by all The governor noted Jester was a close friend of Nogales Mayor James V Robbins with whom he served in World War I.
Beauford H. Jester, 56, Texas governor, was found dead in his sleeping car berth in Houston after a trip from Austin to Galveston for a medical checkup. Lt. Gov. Allan Shivers prepared to succeed him as the 51st Legislature had just adjourned. Officials cited possible coronary occlusion as the cause.
Phoenix July 11 Arizona workmen's compensation law needs amending to keep employer and consumer costs in check. Chairman Joe ONeill and Secretary John Gavin say claims can be filed any time and there is no limit on general disability awards. They consider a general disability schedule possible but have not detailed it. They say such rules could curb malingerers and racketeering, referencing a Phoenix case and a Tucson report set for Tuesday.
Phoenix reports veteran left hander Thornton Lee 42 signs to pitch for the Phoenix Senators of the Arizona Texas league. Lee previously played for the Chicago White Sox the Cleveland Indians and had a brief stint with the New York Giants in 1948. Atty General Wilson rules that state land mining claims incur a 15 dollar annual fee per lease and that noncertified school district employees can be included in the state retirement act if districts vote to participate.
Congress reacts to President Truman dropping his four billion tax program stance. House Ways and Means Chair Doughton approves no general tax increase while Taft calls the move correct. Speaker Rayburn backs transportation tax repeal and foresees farm bills and social security expansion.
King George VI approves emergency powers to take control of London docks amid a strike by over 10,000 dockers in sympathy with Canadian seamen. Soldiers sailors and marines move to the docks to handle cargo on 112 strikebound ships as the cabinet acts at Downing Street.
A New York report notes a custom smelter raised refined copper to 175.4 cents a pound on a Connecticut valley basis, the second rise in a week. Prices for large mine operators remain quoted at 181.5 to 231.5 cents, with recent gains mainly aiding scrap and ore refiners.

Lt General Barton K Yount retired commander of the Army Air Forces Training Command died at Oak Creek lodge north of Phoenix. He was 66 and had lived in Phoenix since 1946. Survivors include his wife and son Barton K Jr. Funeral plans pending.
Rain drenched Tucson with 0.41 inches in four hours, lifting the yearly total to 2.71 inches and leaving it 1.07 inches below the 3.78 normal. The Old Pueblo endured a fourth straight day of rain with more forecast. Local stations logged varying amounts from 0.31 to 0.41 inches as Farmers predicted better crops if rain continues.
