President Truman urged quick ratification of the United Nations charter in a Senate arrival speech. He warned the world watches as he presented the San Francisco charter and pressed lawmakers to act promptly.
President Truman arrives at the Capitol with War Mobilization Director Vinson and other officials. He urges the Senate to ratify the UN charter as the only road to enduring peace, noting the world watches and the charter’s approval will shape global security. He references Connally and Vandenberg and cites the recent San Francisco UN conference.
A medium fleet of B-29 Superfortresses struck Shimotsu near Osaka early today, raising to 23 the number of Japanese industrial cities scorched in the campaign to destroy enemy war factories. Targets included Kumamoto, Kure, Ube, and Simimonoseki as part of the ongoing air assault.
A fleet of nearly 600 B 29s dropped over 500000 incendiaries on a 200 mile belt across Honshu and western Kyushu. The strike hit Kure Shimonoseki Ube and Kuma moto around 3 AM Tokyo time as Japanese defenses were minimal. Fire raged for hours, marking the heaviest American air assault to date and signaling rapid war‑effort momentum.
Civilian workers at Green Gold ranches Sahuarita walked out Thursday protesting the presence of German prisoners of war. Packing plants idle due to shipment disruption and a wage dispute, with manager Cochran unavailable for comment.

Col. W. H. Reid said 12 bodies were recovered from the four engine bomber from Davis Monthan field Tucson that crashed Saturday night in rugged country about 20 miles east of Salt Flat Texas southwest of Carlsbad. An American Airlines crewmember on a westbound plane reported the crash and all aboard were killed. Names of the dead were not announced.
A B-29 bomber from Kirtland field crashes 14 miles northeast of Mayfield during a routine training flight. Four army air force officers and five enlisted men die. One crew member, Corp. Irving A. Elias, survives after being ejected from about 8,000 feet. Weather included severe electrical storms and heavy rain. Names of victims to be released by Campbell airbase, Camp Campbell, Kentucky.
Phoenix reports that Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson is tasked with solving meat shortages. Senator Ernest W. McFarland told Tom Mason of the Phoenix Restaurant Owners association that he passed protests over meat allowances to Anderson and expects improvement.
Catherine Favour Stilwell a private school owner appeared in superior court at 2 15 P M in a wheel chair and pled guilty to permitting the morals and health of a minor to be impaired. She had earlier pled not guilty to five delinquency counts. The court fined her 300 dollars after the plea.
Washington July 2 The House Rules Committee refused to permit the House to send to conference legislation granting 250000 dollars to the Fair Employment Practice Committee.
Senate unanimously approved James F Byrnes as secretary of state in a swift vote without hearings or a layover. The nomination came from the White House and was timed before the United Nations charter presentation. Byrnes, a longtime public servant, would be next in line for the presidency if President Truman did not finish his term.
Chicago July 2 UP Herbert Brownell Jr, Republican National Committee chair, told Midwest Republicans that the Truman administration sought to buy votes in the Montana special congressional election. He cited Edwin McKim’s telegram claiming the Veterans Administration favored eastern Montana for a hospital, with funds authorized for Montana or North Dakota.

The war labor board suspended shift premium and vacation provisions of its Apr 3 directive for 16 790 CIO rubber workers at Akron Ohio after Chairman George W Taylor warned the strike would face disciplinary action. Efforts by the board and union officers to recall Local 2 members have failed as the June 16 strike continues.
The Army and Navy departments today announced that 31 more companies earned the Army Navy production award for excellence in war materials. Among the firms is Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corp in Tucson Arizona.
Convair officials announced a tentative July 6 ceremony at the Tucson plant to mark a presentation by the Army Navy board. All employees will participate and speakers and further details will be released soon. The Tucson plant has modified over 5,000 aircraft since 1942, mainly Liberator B 24 bombers, with Navy PB4Y 2 Privateer prototype engineering ongoing.
President Truman, after urging early ratification of the United Nations charter in the Senate, greeted Senator Hayden of Arizona and Senator Wheeler of Montana and Senator Burton of the Republican side. He then remained in the Capitol to lunch with former colleagues in the Senate Secretary’s office.
