Rain fell across the state after a two month heat spell, with 0.25 inch at the airport and at the University of Arizona. Snow occurred in the north and above 5000 feet, including six inches on Mt. Lemmon. Roads opened later as snow and rain moved out, with temperatures to rise toward normal tomorrow.
The United States charges Red China with threatening war to prevent a renunciation of force in the Formosa area. It demands the release of 13 Americans still held and notes only six of 19 negotiators have been freed. The State Department calls the Chinese statements misleading and urges both sides to renounce force while preserving self defense rights.
Republican leaders nationwide push for President Eisenhower to run again while he hedges on his health and future role. Dinners featuring 100 per plate raise funds for the 1956 campaign, with the President addressing about 60 70 thousand attendees via closed circuit TV and radio.
President Eisenhower and Sen. Walter F. George to meet Monday at the White House amid a growing foreign policy rift in Congress. Democrats attacked Secretary of State Dulles and his brinkmanship, warning the issue could become an election-year focal point. McCormack said the country nearly crossed the brink in Indochina without congressional advice.
London sources report Evelyn Shuckburgh saying the United States and Britain share broad views on Middle East policy ahead of the Washington conference with President Eisenhower and Prime Minister Eden. He noted no basic disagreements and said open discussions remain on some problems.
An Arctic blast enveloped the Midwest driving temperatures to subzero readings in Iowa Minnesota and South Dakota with -24 at Spencer and Elkader Iowa and Mobridge South Dakota and readings near zero or single digits across Wisconsin Missouri and northern states. The cold stretched into Missouri as a raw weekend loomed for regions east of the Rockies and similar freezing conditions reached Texas Alabama Georgia and Virginia.
Police in Bombay killed at least two rioters and wounded three as gunfire echoed in Matunga and other areas. The death toll rose past fifty with arson and looting reported nationwide. Refugees fled Gujarat and camps formed near the city as authorities sought troops. Police blamed Communists for the violence linked to Nehru’s province split plan.
Robert J. Tipton a freelance artist from Evansville Indiana says the so called mad dog killer Leslie Irvin will kill again and cannot be captured alive. Tipton recalls Irvin’s trial in Evansville last April where jurors struggled to be impartial after three weeks of selection. Irvin escaped after sentencing and threats to those involved followed.
Washington budget chief Rowland R Hughes resigns after 11 months as director amid personal reasons. Deputy Perival Brundage will take over April 1. Hughes drew 17000 dollars a year and had led balanced budgets for the current and next fiscal years.
The State Employment Security Commission returned a one million dollar check from Washington after a $100,000 request had extra zeros. A clerk noted the error and notified federal officials who acknowledged the overage.
Mesa girl Carla Hixoh identified ex convict Wayne Vance Taylor as her attacker. County Attorney William P. Mahoney Jr plans to file a new kidnapping charge carrying death or life imprisonment, arguing Arizona's Little Lindbergh law may apply since bodily harm is involved. The original kidnapping charge carries 1 to 10 years. the law's use would depend on motive.
The House Judiciary Committee voted to sponsor a bill requiring public defenders in criminal cases in both Isla and Mar County. Rep. William Younger Wood of Maricopa supports the measure saying it promotes equality in criminal justice between the poor and the wealthy.
Cattle men and dairy farmers urged Congress to require ironclad safeguards for grain acreage diverted under Eisenhower’s soil bank plan to prevent feeding unneeded beef and dairy cattle. The dairy and livestock representatives spoke to the Senate Agriculture Committee, which pushed for early action on its farm bill during a Saturday session.
