The Supreme Court says Congress has 20 more days to adjust the Federal Election Commission, averting an immediate cutoff of federal funds for presidential candidates. The FEC was set to meet tomorrow to grant about 2.5 million dollars to candidates before a court deadline would end the panel’s powers.
New York shares closed with a 15.19 point Dow drop as traders cited Fed tightening signals. The Dow settled at 72.61, still below the 1,000 benchmark despite the weekly decline and renewed pressure on investors. Airline fares rise approved by Civil Aeronautics Board. Nine major carriers can lift fares by 2 percent over two weeks, with Southern Airlines allowed a 1 percent increase and additional moves possible between the mainland and Caribbean reaches.
Tens of thousands of Chinese students and workers cheer former President Richard Nixon in Canton, the final stop of his eight day, three city China tour. He will depart tomorrow on a special Chinese jetliner back to the United States.
About 26 opponents of forced school busing picketed Udall For President headquarters in Tucson. Organizer Heidi H Taylor said Udall misrepresents himself and would not be a congressman if voters checked his voting record. The Tucson campaign HQ on Tucson Boulevard near East Broadway closed today.
A gasoline related blast near a water heater caused about 25000 dollars in damage to a residence at 1408 South Country Club Road. Richard Phipps told firefighters he was cleaning brake parts in his yard and left an open gasoline container in his work room nearby. The fumes exploded but Phipps, his wife, and two children escaped unharmed.
A Superior Court judge dismissed murder charges against Ernest Barry Cooke and Sherry Marie Huck after the county attorney could not prove the victim Cheryl Ann Lindsey was murdered. Lindsey, 18, was found dead near a southwest Phoenix street last June 11. medical examiner ruled asphyxia due to strangulation.
Street patrols report the Dirty Dozen and Devil's Disciples expanding in Tucson after moving from Casa Grande and Coolidge. Leaders claim no real trouble exists, but warnings of future violence persist as rivals recruit, bar fights erupt, and armed members frequent local bars.
Voters in Catalina and nearby areas will decide April 5 on forming a Catalina Volunteer Fire and Rescue District and elect a five member board. The proposal is led by Mark Nicholas with support claiming faster, cheaper service, while opponents fear added taxes. Registration closed today for this election. The district would cover about 3,500 residents spanning from the Pinal County line to four miles south of Catalina, bounded by the Tortolita Mountains and the Coronado National Forest.

Joyner says Dooley, from county staff, felt the county was shortchanged and supports his stance. Dooley could not be reached for comment. Frank Brooks runs the water company as executive director from the city side, and the county will reassess its role.
A joint British Nepalese climbing team heads for Mount Everest with confidence in achieving the first oxygenless ascent of the world’s tallest peak. The expedition, aiming to lead the historic summit bid, emphasizes self supplied air without bottled oxygen.
Doris B. Haire president of the American Foundation for Maternal and Child Health will speak on maternity and newborn health care at 7 p.m. Wednesday in room 5403 at Arizona Medical Center 1501 N Campbell Ave. The talk open to the public is sponsored by the College of Nursing continuing education program and the Childbirth Education Association of Tucson.
Rep Tony West criticizes the Center for Creative Photography as a Schaefer pet project and questions nonlegislative funding. Senate chairman Edward Sawyer challenges faculty salary increases above the 5 percent cap, while Schaefer defends raises as in the state's best interest.
A half hour film on breast self examination plus a discussion on breast cancer will run twice monthly starting Monday at the Arizona Medical Center. Sessions are at 2 p.m. on the first and third Mondays in room 8428, under Donna Hileman, nurse practitioner, University of Arizona College of Nursing. Open to the public at no charge.
Prices for a basket of foodstuffs declined in February, with Pima County down 2.82 percent and Maricopa County down 2.1 percent. Meats poultry and fish dropped 4.87 percent in Pima and 3 percent in Maricopa, per a First National Bank of Arizona survey.
Pima Community College board member Esther Tang may vote on the operating budget if her son, a cinematography department employee, is paid from nonstate funds. County attorney Stolkin says funding changes could allow continued participation, while the attorney general’s opinion urged resignation or abstention. The matter may be raised at the March 24 meeting.
Motorists in Green Valley and Gila Bend can have their cars checked for excessive emissions without leaving town. A mobile inspection unit will be at Green Valley Shopping Center on March 10, 11, 12, 24 and 25 and at 604 W Williams St in Gila Bend on March 3, 4, 5, 17 and 18. Renewal forms must be brought for annual inspections when license plates are renewed.
Local attorney William J. Risner will speak at the Libertarian Supper Club March meeting at the Redwood Gay Nineties. He will discuss a U S Senate bill he calls a Nuremberg defense for government acts. Dinner is $6 at 6 p m and reservations go to Mrs. Dennis Aughenbaugh by Friday. On March 10 Libertarian presidential candidate Roger MacBride will hold a 7 30 p m press conference and cocktail reception at the Plaza International Hotel in Tucson.

Christine Nicholson, 43, an Austrian immigrant, was convicted of possessing a dangerous weapon after police found a dagger in her purse while she stood in a Dec 9 crowd outside the Los Angeles Times building where Vice President Nelson Rockefeller spoke. She is slated for sentencing March 22.
