Grand Jury Hears More Witnesses In Tucson Case

Pima county grand jury, its first in 24 years, continued hearings on crime and vice. Witnesses include Gilbert Martinez of the Spanish American club, Barnet Deckter, and Freddie Kreisler of Crescent Smoke Shop, with jurors and officials under scrutiny of past county administrations.

Labor Leaders Reject Return to Wage Board Plea

Washington February 28 Union leaders rejected government urging labor members to return to the wage stabilization board. The policy committee signaled continued opposition to Eric Johnston’s 10 percent ceiling on wage increases since January 15 1950. AFL officials said three labor representatives would not be reassigned to the board.

Salsbury named head of new health department in Arizona

Dr. Clarence G. Salsbury, long a director at Sage Memorial hospital Ganado on the Navajo reservation, will become commissioner of health welfare and correction a new Arizona department. Gov. Howard Pyle announced the plan noting a 9000 dollar salary plus 5000 set aside to activate the department by July 1 and that the post will oversee 15 boards and officers. The governor praised Salsbury for balance between needs and practicality while stressing checks and limits on gubernatorial tenure to prevent autocracy.

Arizona Flu Siege Wanes

Arizona health officials reported the flu siege easing across most of the state while Maricopa county saw rising rates.
