In Phoenix a proposed special election on a sales tax increase for school aid was ruled illegal because such a vote cannot be held for a general measure. HCR 17 would have put the plan to voters June 2, but under Arizona law only constitutional amendments may be decided by special election.
Pima County records a death toll of 14 after S. Sgt. Charles K. Fisher aged 30 dies in a collision on Pima Highway. Alfred N. Matson Jr. 16, a Catalina High School student, said he was driving 4 mph east on Speedway when the incident occurred.
The Macmillan Khrushchev talks closed with neither side budging an inch the British spokesman said. The only remaining item was a formal communiqué due next Monday and he confirmed the Prime Minister’s upcoming visit to the Soviet Union.
British Prime Minister Macmillan met Ukrainian Premier Kalchenko at an airport guard of honor. They spoke as the army band played national anthems of Britain the Soviet Union and Ukraine. Kalchenko hoped the visit would improve understanding and push for world leaders negotiations for peace despite Cold War tensions. In Berlin a Soviet line representative warned against partition of West Germany favoring a non Communist outcome.
The Arizona Senate gave third reading to school aid measures and sent them to the House. The bills would raise sales and use tax by 50 percent and boost per student funding to 10 percent annually, with other districts budgeting for the increase. Sen. H. S. Corbett and Sen. David Wine supported the measures.
Raul Batista Saldoro a lion tamer in Matanzas Cuba was wounded by friends who opened fire during a Civil era performance. The enraged lion Set attached escaped unharmed and the animal is reported uninjured.
Gasoline prices in Tucson increased with regular and ethyl fuel costs lifting by fractions of a cent at multiple stations. Texaco raised regular and ethyl by four tenths of a cent, while Richfield and Shell locations varied citing recent price shifts and a prior cent-per-gallon rise three months ago.
Washington The Senate Rackets Committee will launch an extensive probe into labor unions tactics and spending in political campaigns. Sen Karl Mundt says the inquiry will cover union funds and proposed flower funds used for sick members, with McClellan offering few details after a closed meeting.
Forecast calls for clear skies with little change. Temperatures range from 35 to near 40 degrees tonight with 65 degrees observed at 2 PM today. Yesterday’s high was 64 and low 33 as humidity runs around 15 percent.
Ex mayor Jaastad and 61 year old widow Mrs. Sexe received a marriage license at Pima County courthouse. A private ceremony is planned for late Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church officiated by Rev. E. Arnold Litz. Jaastad, a retired architect, designed Grace Lutheran and San Agustin Cathedral in Tucson.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles expressed confidence that cancer treatments will allow him to resume his official duties. Phyliss Bernau, his chief secretary, quoted him as saying he would return to the State Department.
New area filings to incorporate flow toward a town named Freehaven with about 1,000 signatures. Atty. Donald E. Arveson says roughly 7,000 real taxpayers live in the area. Petitions seek independence from Tucson annexation while Amphi and Flowing Wells proposals also advance.
Actress Veronica Lake is kicked and her husband held in an incident reported on page 7. The puzzling scene prompts coverage of showbusiness and crowd reaction with brief notes on arrests and security.
Pulit zer Prize winning playwright Maxwell Anderson, 70, of Stamford, was rushed to Stamford Hospital after suffering a stroke this morning. He is the author of Winterset The Bad Seed High Tor The Eve of St Mark and Both Your Houses.
MOSCOW UPI reports a chilly atmosphere as Khrushchev and Macmillan watched a ballet performance of Romeo and Juliet. Both leaders remained straight faced through the last Seen dancers, exchanging no smiles as the scene unfolded.
