Pima County Retail Sales Up 12 Percent in 1988

The Valley National Bank report shows Pima County retail sales rising 12 percent to 590 million dollars, with Maricopa 1.8 billion and the state total near 3 billion. Bank debits climbed 10.8 percent in Tucson to 4.9 billion while Phoenix debits rose 13.5 percent to 17.8 billion.

Hovercraft ferry begins British Columbia run

Vancouver observers report Canada's first scheduled hovercraft passenger service across the Straits of Georgia. The 35 passenger air cushioned craft between Vancouver and Nanaimo speeds over 60 mph and cuts Vancouver Island travel to under 50 minutes, faster than the BC Ferry despite some seating issues on opening runs.

Paroles Granted To 26 Inmates

FLORENCE UPI More than half of 47 state prisoners interviewed by the state Board of Pardons and Parole last week were approved for parole. The board granted parole to 26 inmates and denied 18. The remaining three inmates declined parole.

New York Officials Offer Master Plan

The City Planning Commission approved a 300000 word master plan to make the city livable and lift 300000 residents into a new middle class. The Times says six volumes will publish next summer with a $50 billion, 10 year program funded mainly by federal aid. It calls for housing, education, youth and elderly services, safe city programs, and redevelopment in Harlem and Lower Manhattan.

Markets Scarce For '69 Cotton Crop Headline

The Agriculture Department warns U S cotton producers face tighter markets at home and abroad for the current season. Exports are seen around three million bales, down from 4.2 million last season, with domestic mill use also dipping to 8.5 million. The 1968 crop was 10.8 million bales, up 45 percent from 1967 but below average. A liberal production program targets about 13 million bales, with carryover projected near six million by Aug 1 and government stocks around 2.5 million bales.
