Two flights totaling 27 Japanese planes bombed the Soerabaja area aiming at the main Allied naval base in the East Indies. Allied fighters and antiaircraft guns repelled the attack, with slight damage and some casualties reported amid seven recent alarms over three days.
U S fliers watch Java as governor general appeals for faith and iron will. Dutch air defenses report fresh strikes on Bandoeng with bombers repelled. Batavia bombed with light damage. unexploded ordnance and ID tags prepared in the capital. In Santa Barbara, a Japanese submarine shelled Ellwood oil refinery prompting search by air and sea.
A bomb on Boulevard Ataturk in Ankara exploded within 17 yards of German ambassador Franz Von Papen and Frau Von Papen. They were thrown to the ground but unharmed. A bystander was killed. Ismet Inonu sent officials to the German embassy to check on the envoy.
A military commentator reports imperial troops in Burma are back on the Sittang river about 15 miles east of the Burma road. He notes reinforced Japanese forces and heavy fighting with casualties as British remain in contact with Rangoon and no confirmed landings on the Gulf shore.
Washington reports lend-lease aid to the United Nations has tripled since Pearl Harbor. Edward R. Stettinius Jr. testified that eight months averaged 141 million monthly, rising to 338 million in December and 462 million in January. He noted air ferrying to the Middle East and Africa routes, base facilities in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and total aid surpassing 2 billion by January with continued growth.
President Roosevelt warned Americans that victory in the southwest Pacific is essential or the United States may have to defend California Oregon and Washington shores. He urged unity and outlined a three point program while noting fierce fighting near Goleta and in the Philippines as MacArthur’s forces hold.
Col. Lowell H. Smith assumed command of Davis-Monthan Field succeeding Col. Hubert V. Hopkins who was transferred to command a U S air base in Salt Lake City Utah. Colonel Smith arrived yesterday from Salt Lake City to take over duties.
Reports from Willemstad Curacao say the 8329 ton Panamanian tanker Thalia was sunk by a submarine about 100 miles from Aruba. The American freighter Correci carrying 50000 sacks of sugar was torpedoed and sunk near Cienfuegos. The tanker Republic survived a torpedo attack off the Atlantic coast with five missing and twenty eight survivors reaching port.
Moscow reports Red Army troops occupied Dorogobuzh on the Dneiper river, 50 miles from Smolensk, in a dawn attack with tanks and artillery. Soviet units claim repelling counterattacks, killing over 500 Germans and recapturing 10 settlements while taking prisoners.
Lord Cranborne in the house of Lords stated the British government supports India's political freedom. He welcomed Chiang Kai-Shek's message urging unity between Indian and Chinese peoples and said coordinated leadership could resolve the Indian question.
In San Pedro 3500 CIO Shipyard Workers Union of America members walked off after eight hours amid a push by Bethlehem Steel for 10 hour shifts. Union says not a strike and workers will return to eight hours, with pay and bonuses preserved. Company comments unavailable as page notes indicate continuation on Page 7.
Prime Minister Churchill told the house of commons that Japan rules the air and holds a waning command of the sea in the ABDA area. He said a final Axis victory could come unexpectedly, while noting Japanese land forces may total about 390,000 troops with 100,000 more in support. He cited Britain's heavy shipping losses since 1939 and strained anti submarine and naval forces, warning of a prolonged conflict.
Attorney General Francis Biddle urged criminal penalties for divulging production secrets at a Senate hearing on an official secrets bill. He cited unnamed leakage cases involving aircraft plans and Army codes and said only one conviction had occurred. The plan would extend censorship powers to government contractors with fines and jail terms for willful disclosures.
Two U S Navy vessels the destroyer Truxtun and the stores ship Pollux were wrecked in a Newfoundland gale near Lawrence harbor with at least 189 dead and many survivors rescued by Lawrence residents. The Truxtun commander and 7 officers 90 men perished while Pollux casualties included 1 officer and 91 men. Rescue was hindered by oil slicks and rugged cliffs. Residents of Lawrence were praised for heroic efforts in saving survivors.
