Thomasville Ga reports say the White House fought to stem growing reports that President Eisenhower would run again. Press secretary James Hagerty faced new claims each hour that a decision to seek re election had been made.
Reporters traced hints of political timing as Ike’s status remained unsettled. Eisenhower played 18 holes at Glen Arven after his heart attack, looked fit and ruddy, while Hagerty denied that Sherman Adams or Leonard Hall had spoken for a re election decision. The scene captured a nation eager for clarity on the President’s plans.
In a record crowd of about 3,000 per block along a 32 block route Tucson celebrated 289 entries. The University of Arizona band won the grand sweepstakes and best historical entry as spectators enjoyed 700 horses and 2,500 riders in a two hour parade.
An 18 year old Tucson youth, David Orach of 3253 East Speedway, died after a plunge from a steel platform above a power equipment area near the Arizona Hotel during parade watch. Witnesses say a sleeve caught on flame and he fell, dying from injuries after a fall rather than electrocution. authorities ruled the death accidental.
A change in the weather brings considerable cloudiness and possible showers for Friday. Windy spells and a slight temperature drop are forecast, though rodeo fans should not be bothered. Yesterday's high reached 79 while a Pacific Northwest cold front weakens as it moves east from Montana to Nevada and parts of California.
Milton Ratner, a former Chicago Ford dealer, testified at a Senate hearing that in 1952 he was told by another Ford dealer that Ford Motor Co. officials asked Chicago dealers to raise 50000 for Eisenhower's campaign from Henry Ford's office. Ratner said he and one other Chicago dealer refused to contribute, detailing his split with Ford culminating in the loss of his franchise.
Advance sales for the Tucson Daily Citizen Rodeo Edition have closed but the 96 page illustrated edition remains for sale at Tucson News Inc. The newspaper offers mail order and in person purchase at 25 cents plus mailing costs.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles prepared to tell Senate investigators he originally approved sending 18 U S tanks to Saudi Arabia. Legislative leaders endorsed Gov. Ernest W. McFarland's plan for the All-Arizona Power Authority to act quickly on Colorado River water resources. Sen. Harold Giss urged caution but agreed quick action is needed if the U.S. Supreme Court rules for Arizona. Rep. Sidney Kartus supported the two main points: action now and water as a distribution lever.
Tonight features dog racing at Greyhound Park at 8, pro wrestling at Tucson Sports Center, and the Tucson Winter Playhouse staging Dial M for Murder at Rillito Park.
