United Press correspondent Ralph Teatforth recalls the daring 15 minute rescue of 513 American and Allied prisoners from Cabanatuan by Rangers and Filipino guerrillas. The broadcast titled The March to Freedom airs at KTUC 8:15 tonight as part of Soldiers of the Press.
Cleveland E. Dodge vice president of Phelps Dodge urged the United States to build large copper reserves as a wartime precaution. He compared storage to gold in Kentucky hills and warned future wars could cut South American copper supply. He noted current mine capacity at 75 percent and said government stock needs are supported by the Army and Navy munitions board.
Navy trains bomber crews with a device like a twin engine flying boat. Trainees face take off flight and landing problems using real controls and instruments. Reactions are recorded electrically so instructors monitor every crew member.
Lt Colvin of the 158th regimental combat team receives commendation from Maj Gen Swift for actions in the Damartis Rosario sector in Luzon. The unit, known as the Bushmasters, has served in Panama New Guinea and now Luzon with about 16 Douglas natives in the group.
Three year old Margaret Ann Zimardo, nicknamed Sugarplum, remains at White Memorial Hospital awaiting kidney cancer surgery. Doctors say she has one chance in ten to survive as she endures x rays and observation before the operation. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Zimardo.
