School bond vote looms for District 1

Voters in District 1 will decide on four bond proposals totaling 9.9 million dollars to fund elementary and junior high classrooms sites for future schools Palo Verde High School site work and auditorium additions at Rincon and Palo Verde. If approved tax rate would rise about 27 cents per hundred dollars of assessed valuation.

President Eisenhower told islanders Puerto Rico is a proud free commonwealth joined to the United States by choice. Governor Luis Muñoz Marín welcomed him and noted broad unity on the commonwealth’s permanent union. Trio Holds Up Grocery Store

The Idyl Hour Grocery Store at 537 E Delano St was robbed by at least three men shortly after noon. Owner Edythe Reichardt heard the intrusion and saw a masked man press an object to her back as two other men emptied the cash register and took wine and cigarettes.

Flowing Wells Voters Approve 1.125 Million School Bonds

Flowing Wells residents approved a 1,125,000 dollar school bond issue by more than a three to one margin. Only 190 ballots were cast compared with 215 in 1958. The plan includes 775,000 for elementary bonds and 350,000 for high school improvements plus permission to sell unused sites. Construction will occur over four years, with an new elementary school planned this year and additions to Davis and Frans elementary schools as well as admin and dressing room improvements at the high school.

Cool Tucson Weather Still Warm Inside Yard Work Call

The city remains cool with highs in the low 60s and nightly lows near 25 to 30. Gusty winds are expected to ease tonight as temperatures drift little tomorrow. Yesterday reached a 60 degree high with 51 in the afternoon sun and 19 percent humidity.

Earthquake Kills 17 In Algeria

A powerful quake in eastern Algeria killed 17 people and injured about 88. The tremor toppled hundreds of huts and buried many in the rugged mountains around Setif, with confirmed fatalities rising as rescuers searched the debris.

Murphey to Be Arraigned in Bribery Case in Tucson

Real estate operator John W Murphey is slated for arraignment in Superior Court on bribery charges. Four Tucsonans face counts from evidence gathered by the defunct Pima County Grand Jury. Car Appears Main Lead In Gas Station Slaying

Police seek a two tone 1959 Mercury after attendant Glen D. Smith was found shot and killed at Arnold's Texaco on Stone Ave and Drachman St. about 3:30 to 6 a.m. The cash drawer showed about 104 dollars missing. Detective Captain William C. Ross leads the probe with no suspects yet.

TMC Drive Reaches 330 787 for Tucson Medical Center Fund

Tucson Medical Center’s fund drive reaches 330 787 with 25 241 in new contributions. The women’s division met at the Servicemen’s Center and collected 16 741 plus 8500 in advance gifts announced by campaign chairman Mundey Johnston. Goal remains 800 000 for two new wings one for children and one for maternity. The men’s division to report later today.

General Wilson reassigned to Ellsworth AFB near Rapid City

Brig. Gen. Delmar E. Wilson, longtime commander of the 36th Air Division at Davis-Monthan AFB, will take command of the 821st Air Division at Ellsworth AFB near Rapid City after a six week training and transition course at Castle AFB Merced California. Col. William F. Bacon will assume command of the 12th Air Division until its disbanding next month.
