Councilman James Kirk asserted Mayor Don Hummel may know more about the San Pedro water land deal than he admits. The dispute nearly turned into a physical confrontation at Tuesday's City Council meeting and the two men exchanged sharp words afterward.
A one ton Mercury capsule atop an Atlas rocket flew 1425 miles down the Atlantic range reaching 107 miles up and returning at 12,850 mph in 18 minutes. Project Mercury Director Gilruth said a man would have survived the flight and cabin pressure stayed normal. Three astronauts Glenn Grissom Shepard were named finalists for the first manned mission possibly in April with flight 115 miles up and 290 miles over the Atlantic.
A historic snowstorm blanketed West Texas and southeast New Mexico with over a foot of snow turning to slush as dawn broke. The storm caused widespread traffic tie ups, two deaths, and a roof collapse in Lubbock. Flooding threatened Alabama rivers while heavy rain drenched the Carolinas and other regions.
In the snowy dawn eight persons were injured as a tornado hit two residences. A school board spokesman said none of 535 pupils were in the school. In Texas Clavene near Levelland saw up to 20 inches of snow with 19 inches depth and buses stopped. Lubbock with 128691 population was paralyzed by a foot of snow while Lovington New Mexico faced 16 inches. Visibility neared zero during the storm.
President Kennedy ordered Labor Secretary Arthur Goldberg to take federal action to end the wildcat strike by flight engineers that grounded three major airlines and throttled service at others. The dispute has cost airlines an estimated 5 million dollars daily as court orders and threats of contempt push union officials and engineers to testify.
The Tucson area suffers airline disruptions as American lays off 110 workers and TWA sends 21 of 30 home. About 40 flights canceled leave 700 stranded, with SP trains sold out and travelers using cars or seeking Phoenix connections. Rodeo events and Denver trips face delays due to the strike.

Yesterday's high was 62 and the downtown breeze kept it cooler. frost was reported in the mountains and Ft. Lowell road areas where temps fell to 29.
