A. J. Bayless Markets buys eight Consumers Markets in Tucson making Arizona’s largest grocery chain. Price not disclosed though Consumers Markets is described as a multimillion dollar operation.
Clouds lighten over Cape Canaveral while Tucson stays overcast. A cooler trend moves in with a 60 degree high tomorrow and a low near 40 tonight. Today at 2 pm the temperature is 58 with 43 percent humidity. Full Weather Report on Page 4.
John Glenn begins his day as any American worker but soon enters history. Dr William Douglas attaches sensory pads to monitor Glenn’s reactions as he climbs the Atlas rocket and launches aboard Friendship 7. After routine holds, Glenn achieves the first American orbital flight circling the globe.
Astronaut John H. Glenn Jr. circled the globe three times then landed in the Atlantic and was picked up by the destroyer USS Noa. He reported feeling hale and hearty after exiting the capsule and described the Earth view as tremendous.
