Tucson’s 34th annual Rodeo Parade covered five miles with 358 entries 22 marching bands and nearly 1000 horses drawing thousands along downtown streets under blue skies. A full page of parade pictures is on Page 17.
The Fiesta de las Alaska parade in Tucson featured 40 entry categories with prizes for winners. Notables included Buffalo Bill actor Jack Rutherford and CHILL WILLS, with Alana Poole named best authentic Indian female and Randy G. Cox best boy.
The parade, described as bigger and better than ever, drew a dog club entry facing crowd disruptions as unruly dogs dashed into the procession. Spectators noted heavy camera attention along the route and street conditions forced marching bands to tread carefully, with one visitor remarking on the safety of the performers.
Champion cowboy Ross Dollar hide broke his left ankle after stepping into a hole at the rodeo grounds this morning. He was taken to St. Mary's for treatment. Dollarhide, world champion steer wrestler in 1953 and 1985 bulldogging winner here, was among the injured. Timothy Scott, 9, was kicked in the chest by a horse and sent to Tucson Medical Center for X rays. Judy Miller, 16, slipped on a vacant lot and was pinned by a car when a horse fell, rushed to St. Mary’s for treatment.
