The Arizona Senate passed a bill to raise the regents from eight to 10 members and extend terms from eight to 10 years. The measure limits appointing more than two regents from any one county and moves to the House for action. Other bills on the calendar were routine.
About 20 Tucson business leaders urged a city council panel to zone the Freeway bypass area to exclude commercial development. They seek a permanent deal to prevent motels, restaurants, and filling stations along the bypass, proposing a city committee to negotiate with officials within a week.
A slender Vanguard rocket launched a 20 inch miniature weather station into orbit around the earth. The tiny sphere with photocells and radio transmitters will orbit the globe 16 times daily for two weeks. A small tape recorder will relay data to earth for analysis of clouds seas and land. A group of eight cameramen and eighteen youths witnessed the event.
The County Board of Supervisors approved a 12.5 square mile Thermal Belt zoning plan guiding future development along Oracle road foothills north of the city. It envisions one home per acre, with commercial zoning at the Oracle corner. A later minor amendment adds traffic considerations to the plan with final approval of major routes by the board.
A United States Air Force BAT jet bomber exploded upon landing at a base in Georgia. Two occupants were killed and a third passenger was critically injured.
Timan and associates purchase Rancho del Lago a 1 850 acre guest and cattle ranch near Vail from R Harold Nason and family. The sale price is undisclosed and Arnold Bailey will operate ranch facilities temporarily. Nason owns other resort properties and Timan also expands holdings with La Posta Que Mada Ranch nearby.

A flash fire in a South Tucson adobe home killed two boys, Francisco Escalante 14 and his half brother Augustine Lopez, both sons of Mrs. Francisca Lopez. Francisco died at Pima County Hospital after 14 hours with severe burns. Augustine perished in the blaze. The youths lived with their aunt and uncle at 450 West 38th Street. Rosary was set for 8 tonight at 437 West 28th Street. Funeral services follow at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at Santa Cruz Church with burial in Holy Hope Cemetery.

In six hours 159 Democrats were cast with no contests for mayor and three council posts in the April 1 election. City Clerk Mary Fields notes a write-in candidate must meet the regular petition threshold to qualify on the ballot, with 410 votes for mayor for a Democrat and 278 for a Republican.
