Western European governments pressed Secretary Acheson for a firm reference to collective military action in the North Atlantic security treaty. Senator Vandenberg favors wording aligned with UN Charter principles, while Acheson says the issue is wording, not intent.
Washington February 17. The house agriculture committee approved 44 million dollars in emergency loan funds for farmers in blizzard affected west and southwest areas. Rep Granger proposed a revolving fund through the regional agricultural credit corporation for urgent credit to recover losses from storms. Chairman Cooley said the bill should be brought up by unanimous consent soon.
Anchorage Alaska February 17 A pilot fought a crazed passenger for 15 minutes during a seven thousand foot plunge. Don Dorothy knocked out Lorado Bello with a fire extinguisher. Bello, a San Francisco Filipino, was taken by marshal to Providence hospital. Rodeo committee predicts largest La Fiesta de los Vaqueros yet with 200 contestants and packed parades and dances including a sellout Vigilante dance and TV newsreel coverage.
The Axis Sally treason trial moves into defense with James J. Laughlin saying Miss Gillars faces a long case. He plans to call 500 to 1,000 former GIs as witnesses as government evidence centered on undermining troop morale. Two German witnesses arrive to counter government testimony.
Sen Clinton Anderson of New Mexico will be the featured speaker at Arizona’s Jackson Jefferson day dinner at the Hotel Westward Ho on March 11. The event is sponsored by the state Democratic central committee with Tony Jones and Z Simpson Cox named chairs of arrangements and general chairman respectively.

Munich February 17 The U S Army publicly sentenced Frantisek Klecka 31 a waiter on the Orient Express to 20 years at hard labor in a Czechoslovak spy ring case. The eight man military commission relaxed secrecy while naming the first defendant and inviting press but did not disclose charges or trial testimony details.
Washington reports a first government test of plastic coated seeds sprayed from aircraft to reseed a 5,000 acre Idaho plateau near Crane Creek east of Weiser. The nitrogen enriched seeds mix crested wheat grass and clover with a feldspar fly ash cover and hormone treatment.
Tokyo February 17 UPI Army Secretary Kenneth Royall denies remarks about withdrawing U S troops from Japan if war with Russia occurs but notes he spoke with twelve American correspondents February 6 at the U S embassy. He says no decision has been made and any announcement would be premature.
Social Security Commissioner Altmeyer paused the hearing on Arizona's welfare program until March 14 at state officials' request. Arizona faces claims it excluded reservation Indians from benefits, notably Navajos and Hopis. The delay aims to avoid exhausting funds while testimony and witnesses are gathered.
