Washington reports a 32 070 901 900 dollar appropriations bill to supply munitions merchant ships and allied war materiel for 1941 42 and 43. The House committee denounces strikes and profiteering while urging immediate action and noting welders' strikes slow production.
President Roosevelt at a press conference warned that under certain conditions the Axis could shell New York tomorrow or drop bombs on Detroit tonight. He said air force and Navy may be insufficient to stop such attacks and noted Alaska concerns. He also commented on a loan to Russia and framed it in stark terms of German defeats.

President Roosevelt vetoed a bill to promote guayule and rubber plants in the United States and urged Congress to pass a broader measure covering other American nations. He said crude rubber sources for defense must be developed across the western hemisphere, inside or outside the U S.
In the central Mediterranean British naval aircraft struck a strong Italian fleet formation. The torpedoes left one cruiser ablaze and another destroyer likely hit. Four RAF planes are missing, but one bomber crew and a fighter pilot are reported safe.
Cairo reporting British headquarters announced that German reconnaissance detachments withdrew from positions in advance of the Axis lines near Gazala. The British communique said the country south of a line from Ain El Gazala to El Mechili was apparently clear of enemy troops.
London Feb 17 Soviet troops reportedly drove into Novgorod a strategic center 100 miles south of Leningrad in a latest push. The Vichy Radio reported this urging Soviet offensives in the Novgorod area have continued for weeks.
U S Caribbean commander Lieut Gen Frank M Andrews says at least one Nazi U boat in the Aruba attack may have been sunk. Air and sea forces hunt for remaining subs as oil on the water complicates confirmation. Andrews spoke from Aruba where the raid began and he returned after launching planes and craft.
At the Tucson Livestock show 153 steers sold for an estimated average of 18 cents a pound. Grand champion bull Anxiety Mixer, Taussig bred and Denver top bull, was bought for 7000 dollars by Rancho Sacatal of Paul Spur Arizona. Reserve champion bull OJR Royal Domino 33rd hailed from Sun Valley Hereford Ranch Phoenix. Arizona Bred Champion bull went to DJS Heir 3rd owned by David C. Jeffcott Patagonia. Grand and reserve champion heifers named with Brilliant Beauty from Sun Valley Hereford Ranch Phoenix.
Churchill says Germany lost the Gneisenau and Scharnhorst for some time after last week’s English Channel battle. He notes damage will require repairs and that Royal Navy strength will be reinforced with new ships from Britain and the United States to meet the challenge. He speaks to Parliament amid criticism after Singapore fall.

Phoenix February 17 Atty Gen Joe Conway said he would seek to join Oklahoma in its appeal to the US Supreme Court challenging a ruling that its train limit law is unconstitutional. Arizona and Oklahoma faced similar questions as Judge Levi S Udall held the Arizona law unconstitutional.
Washington reports congressmen urged all out material aid to China as quickest way to stem Japan and pledged millions of American men and thousands of planes would dominate every battlefront. Senator Austin urged supplies to Chiang Kai-Shek to aid immediate operations. Representative Maas noted U S responsibility for Singapore loss and promised a coming wave of American air and sea power to Asia Europe Africa.
From the war desk report by Louis F. Keemle United Press describes the Japanese push in southern Burma past the Salween river extending toward Papun and Martaban. The piece warns that cutting the Burma road would halt supplies to Chiang Kai-Shek’s forces, undermine China’s wartime capacity, and threaten Rangoon and India, signaling a broader strategic danger for the Allies.
The Burma front tightens as British forces retreat 50 miles from the Salween to the Bilin river. Japanese gains push about 20 miles west of Salween toward a key railroad junction, threatening Rangoon and tightening the battle line near Papun and Thaton.
Petroleum Coordinator Harold Ickes announced a voluntary 15 percent cut in civilian gasoline use in the east while saying no hard rationing is needed yet. The industry proposed a 7 pm to 7 am curfew on retail east coast sales with Sunday bans, and favors a consumer coupon system if needed. Ickes cited a 72-member oil council and a planned 350 000 barrel per day east coast pipeline as long term relief.
Java residents were urged to resist as Japanese forces threaten to storm key positions. Dutch air raids on Palembang and targets near Sumatra and Java accompanied warnings of oil field devastation and a looming battle to defend the Dutch East Indies.
Phoenix February 17 federal agents searched premises of German Italian and Japanese aliens within one mile of five Arizona air bases. H R Duffey Phoenix FBI chief said one alien was arrested for possession of a shotgun and shells. Searches centered near Luke Williams Thunderbird Falcon Fields and Davis Monthan Field near Tucson.
German radio says it uncovered a sensational document among the papers of Edouard Daladier and former French ministers, detailing plans to kill Adolf Hitler and German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop.
