Chicago patrolman Henry McKinley aged 46 was suspended for 30 days after allegedly refusing a duty call. He was in his squad car when a man sought to report a robbery and McKinley reportedly said he would investigate after finishing his lunch hour.
Legendary bandleader Lawrence Welk played in the Tucson Open Pro-am at the Tucson National Golf Club. Welk, age 63, said he plays golf about twice weekly, noted his current handicap around 13 to 18, and discussed concerns about big band viability and a music career spanning 30 years. He imports a wholesome show life in California near studios and plans limited touring.
Television host Lawrence Welk recalls the rise of color TV and its impact on his show and audience. He defends his wholesome image, comments on rumors about his family, and notes fan affection as Arnie's Army and other viewers line up to meet him on the golf course.
A mother and six children perished in two rural Michigan fires about 35 miles apart. Patricia Dowding and her children Larry 9 Jerry 5 Theresa 8 died in a single story home seven miles south of Charlotte. Ronald Dowding 30 was hospitalized in critical condition. Nearby, Joseph Wagner 5 Jody Lorraine Wagner 3 Jeffrey Wagner 6 and Jose phine Wagner 25 also died as flames destroyed their 100 year old brick farmhouse one mile south of Williamston. three Wagner children are dead and their mother is hospitalized.
