Murdock says pension plan is unfortunate

Third Selective Service Registration Set For Monday

The third registration for the national selective service act occurs Monday in Pima county from 7 to 9 a m for men ages 20 to 44 not listed in prior registrations. Akron Ohio February 14 The Truman committee will launch an investigation next Tuesday to examine the rubber situation in the United States Senator Ralph Brewster says the inquiry will probe plans for synthetic plants and the path of expansion under the 400 million construction program The session will be closed with Justice Department anti trust chief Thurman Arnold as the first witness and Jones and other officials summoned to testify. Civilian rubber use rose to about 800 000 tons last June before rationing began December 11.

Japanese Effort to Crack Salween River Fails in Burma

Burma war bulletin reports two days of heavy fighting near Paan and 30 miles north of Martaban show the second major Japanese attempt to cross the Salween river line collapsed. Casualties were inflicted on Japanese forces while RAF and Allied pilots pressed air and ground attacks as recon flights scanned Japanese held territory.

Bombers Hit Japanese Shipping in Dutch East Indies

The war department reports 12 heavy American bombers attacked enemy shipping in the Macassar area of the Netherlands East Indies. It is believed at least one large Japanese ship was hit, with a large fire later observed in the attack area. All planes returned to base.

Selective Service officials announce about 9,000,000 men aged 20 to 44 are registered with two to three months to list men ages 18 20 and 45 64 for civilian defense and war production roles. Census estimates 15,500,000 in those age bands. Including 17,639,118 already registered for ages 21 to 35, total potential manpower tops 42,000,000. Open registrations occur today in many locales with some states allowing yesterday enrollment.
