Weather notes predict sunny skies in Tucson with warm temperatures. High near 70 and low around 40, following a 65/39 yesterday. Midwest reports snow and freezing rain. five inches in areas outside Springfield and one to three inches in northeastern Missouri to northern Indiana.
About 100 stunned basketball fans and three off duty officers witnessed a deadly shooting at a South Side recreation center gym. A 7 year old Tucson resident was killed by a .12 gauge shotgun while Bobby R. Harris of 481 West Street was struck in the back and neck and died. Police reported the incident occurred around 8:34 pm.
Danny Davis, 15, of 1031 5 Palmera Ave, is detained at the Pima County Juvenile Court Center after a shotgun slaying at the Santa Rosa Recreation Center. Investigators say the victim, a 9 pm game attendee, died at St Marys Hospital as witnesses and off duty officers observed the incident.
City Personnel Director Paul D. Miner voided the fire captain exam after suspected leakage. He cited abnormally high scores and a week-long probe with circumstantial hints. Fire Chief L F Peterson defended his men while noting no proof yet of wrongdoing. The test, used for captain promotion, may be reissued next month.
Arizona officials anticipate as much as 65 million in impounded federal highway funds may be released under President Ford to support priority projects including I 19 Tucson Nogales I 10 Buckeye Phoenix area and I 40 Kingman Ash Fork. Officials estimate 1200 to 1300 new full time jobs if funds are released by June 30 and reimposed after that date.
A $2 million federal grant for a new Tucson School District 1 elementary school at David Monthan AFB is under review by HEW and expected to be approved in four to five weeks. The base housing expansion this summer will add over 400 students, worsening overcrowding at Lowell Smith Elementary on base. The district temporarily relies on base housing tax reimbursement while awaiting funds and construction.
