A Bell County grand jury refused to indict Pfc. Hans J. Audehm of West Allis Wisconsin on burglary charges. He escaped with two other prisoners through a second story jail window and did not learn of the action.
The National Electrical Week observance in Tucson includes a banquet at the Pioneer Hotel tomorrow night to honor Cecil H. Clark city electrical inspector and Glenn H. Eastman retired electrical inspector for the Public Works Department. Attendees will also pay tribute to A R Seaman. Clark and Seaman plan retirement this spring. Eastman, a 47 year Ibew member, moved from the Midwest to Tucson in 1951 after a career spanning Florida and the Midwest.
District 1 will hold a 9 p.m. KGUN Channel 9 telecast to explain a $19 million school bond proposal ahead of the March 10 vote. The program pre-empts Sid Caesar Show and includes 11 PTA meetings with bond speakers at multiple Tucson schools and district offices.
Charles R Johnston a Phoenix attorney is to be named federal housing director for Arizona by Sen Carl Hayden. Johnston 36 will head FHA activities in the state succeeding the late Rufus Spoon who held the post from 1961 until his July death.
The Tucson Wildlife Union urges the Board of Supervisors to back a plan by the County Parks and Recreation Dept to create nature trails along stream beds in the Tucson area. The Parks Dept led by Gilbert Ray has advocated trails on the Rillito Santa Cruz Tanque Verde and Pantano Washes. The board discussed an access road project but gave no formal instruction to departments. The Horsemen's Association of Pima County representing over 1,200 riders also seeks streambed trails.
A Pima County Health Department inspector filed a misdemeanor charge yesterday in Justice Court against Ernest J. Widdes owner of the Chicago Meat Provision Co for offering adulterated food. Field tests showed a sulfide preservative in meat. county officials confirmed the finding at the lab and noted prior warnings.
Sheriff Walden Burr accepted the resignation of Richard C. Smith the county homicide investigator. Smith 46 of 3340 E Lester St announced personal reasons for leaving. final day will be February 20 after a year in the criminal bureau following Marine Corps service as a lieutenant colonel.
Harold B. Thurber, president of the Southern Arizona International Livestock Association and Pima County Fair, said the 1964 Pima County Fair and Livestock Show promises to be the largest ever. The event runs March 11 for five days at the fairgrounds on South 6th Avenue with over 300 head of cattle from Arizona, Sonora and nearby states. space for commercial exhibits is sold out and three more circus tents were added. Thurber urged ongoing civic cooperation to expand permanent quarters.
A three mile north of Mesa a car left Beeline Highway and plunged into the Arizona Canal killing driver Bernard J. Jarboe 45 and two passengers Leonard B. Hardt 67 and Arthur R. Mardick 42. Arizona toll climbs to 58 for 1964 with the crash discovered by tribal police.
In Phoenix a House floor clash pits anti ultraconservative sentiment against civil rights push. In Public Institutions Committee action on a university speaker ban was postponed after a 7-4 vote with Holsclaw seeking regents input before proceeding. Rep Wipperman attacked Birch Society rhetoric while Rep Carrillo urged delaying the university bill.
John Radell Harris, 65, longtime Tucson resident and former Butera Trust, Inc. associate, died last night in a local nursing home. He lived at 5401 E Burns St and was a freelance writer. A University of Wisconsin and UC Berkeley graduate, he served in Army Intelligence during World War II. Survived by two sisters and three nephews. private funeral services planned.
President Johnson greeted Britain's Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home at the White House North Portico for talks on world trouble spots. Johnson praised US UK ties and vowed to work together for the common good amid two days of discussions. The White House grounds were snowy and freezing.
